Harriet Foale was remembered in a very moving thanks giving service to celebrate her life which was far too short, but very well lived

On Thursday the 17th September John and I were in Devon to attend the thanks giving service for Harriet Foale. Harriet sadly died on the 4th August 2026 aged 33 years from Clear Cell Sarcoma.

The service was in the beautiful old church of St Michael and All Angels in the village of Stokenham and was well attended by many from the local community and by family and friends. The large country church was packed, with many having to stand, but all wanting to show their respect and love for Harriet and her family.

It was a privilege to meet in person, Angie and Ian, Harriet’s mum and dad, Graham, her partner, Bea her sister, Simon a friend and retired GP, who accompanied Harriet on her Clear Cell Sarcoma journey and many others. Harriet played such a big part in her community. She was also an excellent show jumper, farmer and breeder of Holstein cattle, which she also showed.

The service was very moving with many tears shed. Angie, Ian, Graham and Simon each took their turn to tell us about their memories of Harriet and the special times they had shared. Hymns were sung, a poem read and music played. The vicar gave a sensitively pitched talk and the service concluded by playing a recording of Elton John singing the Princess Diana version of Candle in the Wind, which perfectly fitted this English Rose.

The weather was kind and afterwards people were able to stand outside the local pub, opposite the church, where delicious Devon scones with tea, coffee and drinks were served. It was perfect except that the one person we all wanted to be there, Harriet, couldn’t be.

John and I are so glad we travelled to Devon to attend the thansgiving. There is never anything better than meeting people in real life but what a tragedy not to have met Harriet other than on a WhatsApp meet.

Occasions like this only inspire John and I even more to continue to pursue the goal of funding research to find that better more effective treatment and cure we all want and need so desperately.
