Great North Run 2025 - to remember Adam McDowell and to raise funds for Clear Cell Sarcoma Research

Bronagh, Emily and Orlaith are running the Great North Run in memory of Adam McDowell who died in August last year of Clear Cell Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer, that the Edward Showler Foundation is funding research into at the Cancer Institute at University College London.

Adam was a much loved dad, son, partner, cousin and friend. He was one of a kind and we were lucky to know him. We know that he would be both amused and surprised that we're running a half marathon, and probably a bit embarrassed at the idea of too much of a fuss!

The cancer that killed him is rare, aggressive and devastating (sarcomas make up less than 2% of all cancers diagnosed in the UK each year, but even amongst the rarest sarcoma subtypes, there are hundreds of new cases a year.) We are running for the Edward Showler Foundation who are doing great work in funding research and raising awareness of this disease. John and Ellie set up the charity in memory of their son Edward who died 8 months after he was diagnosed aged 28. Edward was a young doctor, and like Adam he was otherwise fit and healthy with so much to life to live. We are very grateful that John and Ellie work so hard and hope we can help to raise some money to help the cause.

On the day we'll be thinking of Adam, Ed and all those who have been affected by clear cell sarcoma. In particular we will be remembering Adam's stoicism, bravery and calmness even in the hardest of the times.
